Professionally, Laine operated a retail bakery in Oakland, CA, served as a food association professional in Oakland and Chicago, as an Assistant Secretary at the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Washington, DC under President Gerald Ford, and as a food broker in Boca Raton, Florida. He retired in 1989 and has devoted himself to volunteer work since that time.

At age 91, Laine is healthy, active, and deeply involved in civic, social, and philanthropic activities in Boca Raton, FL and the surrounding area. He first joined Rotary while living and working in Oakland. Later, while living in Chicago, he joined the Rotary Club of Chicago, where he served as president of the club’s incoming class. When he moved to Florida he became active in Rotary in Boca Raton, and he served as district governor for Rotary International District 6930. He continues to be active in the Rotary Club of Boca Raton Sunset, which he chartered as DG in 1996. He is also active in the United States Submariner Veterans where he served as Base Cmdr., at Advent Lutheran Church, and on the boards of numerous organizations such as The Guatemala Tomorrow Fund and Boca Condominium Association, where he served as Co-President. Laine is active in many local and national political and social events.
